This Fall, Try a Different Kind of AI

This Fall, Try a Different Kind of AI

Trade Artificial Intelligence for Assateague Island

AI can help you plan a vacation. It can tell you where to eat, build an itinerary, and come up with a list of things to do.

But there's another kind of AI we'd rather introduce you to this fall: Assateague Island.

Because no matter how good technology gets, there are some things you really do have to experience for yourself.

Like walking onto the beach on a cool October morning and having what feels like the whole shoreline to yourself. Seeing one of Assateague's wild horses grazing off in the distance. Hearing the waves instead of your phone. Or catching one of those sunsets over the marsh that makes everyone stop what they're doing for a minute and look.

Fall is a pretty good time to do all of that.

Let Assateague Set the Pace

The island feels different once summer winds down.

The days get cooler, the crowds thin out, and suddenly a long walk on the beach sounds like a pretty good way to spend the morning.

Bring your bikes. Take a hike. Rent a kayak and explore the bayside. Go fishing. Camp for the weekend. Pack lunch and stay for the day.

Fall also brings migrating birds through the area, and of course, Assateague's wild horses are here year-round. Just remember, they're wild animals, so enjoy seeing them from a safe distance.

And if your only plan is to walk the beach for a while?

That works too.

Don't Stop at the Island

One of the best things about visiting Assateague is everything else you can get to from here.

Take the back roads instead of rushing to the next stop. You'll pass farm fields, roadside stands,  and small towns that are especially fun to explore this time of year.

Spend a few hours in Berlin. Head south to Snow Hill or Pocomoke City. Get out on the Pocomoke River, where fall colors make an already beautiful paddle even better, or explore the trails at Pocomoke State Forest.

And then there's Ocean City.

Fall means more room on the beach and Boardwalk, but there's still plenty to do. Grab a bite, browse the shops, find some live music, or just sit somewhere with a view of the water.

You don't have to squeeze everything into one day. In fact, we'd recommend that you don't.

Eat Like You Live Here

While you're exploring, don't forget about one of the best parts of traveling around Maryland's Coast: the food.

This is the time to stop at the farm stand you normally drive past. See what goodies await at the farmers market. Order the local seafood. Try a locally made beer, wine, or spirit. Ask your server what's fresh or where they'd go on their day off.

Around here, the person giving you the recommendation might know the farmer who grew it, the waterman who caught it, or the person in the kitchen preparing it.

That's something an algorithm has a hard time replicating.

Maybe Don't Plan Every Minute

We're not suggesting you throw your phone into the Atlantic. You'll probably need it for directions. And we're certainly not going to complain if you use it to find a great place for dinner.

But once you get here, maybe put it away for a little while.

Take the walk without checking your notifications. Watch the sunset without worrying about getting the perfect photo. Take a wrong turn and see where it goes.

AI can help you plan the trip.

Assateague Island can remind you why you took it.

This fall, come experience our favorite kind of AI on Maryland's Coast.

No prompts. No filters. Just the real thing.
